KSM QE2 Field Group – Founded on 16th December 2015
The Recreation Field in Kington St Michael is owned by the Parish Council and in October 2011, Kington St Michael Parish Council approved a Deed of Dedication for the Recreation Field to become a QEII Field in Trust. This means that the field will be forever protected as a recreation facility.

In 2016, KSM QE2 Field Group was formed as a voluntary group comprising parishioners and users of the Recreation Field who wish to help enhance facilities at the QE2 Field and encourage greater use by others within the local community.
The Group’s vision is to create an enjoyable place for people to play and a more usable outdoor space to bring together our community.
This page has been created to keep members of the local community up to date with news and events related to the QE2 Field in Kington St Michael.

July: We’re delighted to warmly welcome our new Treasurer, Immy, to the team and our sincere thanks go to Hayley for all the time and effort she has put into the role; we really appreciate everything she has done for the QE2 Field Group over the last few years.
We are also on the hunt for someone in the village with a sewing machine suitable for carrying out heavy duty repairs to our gazebo carry bags. If you can help, then we’d love to hear from you – please email us or send a message via our Facebook page.
Volunteers always welcome – From ad hoc event support to practical hands-on help, we welcome hearing from anyone interested in supporting the work we do.

April:
Anti-Social Behaviour at the QE2 Field
On the weekend of 25th & 26th April, Merv Singer went down to undertake some ongoing work in our new Muga area at the QE2 Field to find the newly marked surface vandalised.
This is incredibly disappointing anti-social behaviour after all the hard work that has gone into making this area nice for our community to enjoy.
These are not chalk markings that can be washed away. These have been etched into the new surface with a bit of the stone from the path in front of the Muga – this must have taken a lot of time and effort. A lot of rubbish was also left around the rest of the playing surface.
If you witnessed this, know who did it, or you know who Jess H is, please email us at ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com.
March: MUGA – Damage from weeds to the playing surface of the multi-use games area (MUGA) has been repaired by Merv. The planned line markings for basketball, football, badminton and pickleball will be installed as soon as possible. Sadly, damage to the MUGA wall (caused by vandalism) will now need to be repaired. As a great facility designed to benefit our local community, this is very disappointing. If you know who is responsible for this, please email ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com.
BBQ Hire – Summer is not far off! Remember that villagers can hire the community BBQ (with access to water supply) – simply drop us an email to check availability and book.
New Treasurer Needed – KSM QE2 Field Group needs a new TREASURER to join our lovely team of volunteers and contribute to enhancing facilities and help shape the future of our QE2 Field. Perhaps you are new to the village and would like the opportunity to meet new people. Or maybe you have young children who would benefit from improved facilities at the field. Whatever your interest, we’d love to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering for the Treasurer role.
Absolutely NO experience is required! You just need to be organised; keep financial records; provide a financial overview at meetings where funding is discussed in relation to field improvements (ad hoc/as needed) and manage money-related activities supporting key village events (e.g. bonfire night) reimbursing expenses etc. You can get involved with any field group projects as much, or as little, as it suits you! Email us for more information; and BIG THANKS to Hayley Heath for all her hard work over the past few years as our Treasurer.
We have some great ideas for the future but can ONLY make things happen with enough volunteers to continue the work we do!

February: As part of a nationwide, community-led initiative, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, an English oak was planted at the Recreation Field on 22nd February 2026.
Funding from the tree comprised of a grant from the campaign and contributions from both Kington St Michael Parish Council and the QEll Field Group. The location of the tree will be added to a national map recording the positions of all the trees planted and also those in the Great Western Community Forest.
Those involved in the planting were (left to right) Peter Macdonald (RAF and RFA veteran) Chair of KSM Parish Council, Alex Marton, arborist, and Alex Martin Chair of the QEll Field Group.
January: The QE2 Field Group was delighted to receive a £50 donation from the village Book Recycling Scheme – thank you!
Upcoming QE2 Field projects in 2026 include:
- Planting a commemorative oak tree in memory of service men and women who lost their lives
- Underplanting of woodland, close to the stream
- Pruning of apple trees
- Further children’s playground improvements
- The newly fenced multi-use hard court area will soon be fully functional once the new surface is marked out for various ball and racquet games, plus basketball.
Feedback from the recent Parish Council survey (related to the QE2 Field) is also currently under review.
KSM QE2 Field Group is a very small team of volunteers working closely with the Parish Council to make improvements at the recreation field. If you’d like to get involved, extra pairs of hands to help with specific projects or events are always welcome – with no obligation to attend meetings! Simply drop us an email if you’d like to support us: ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com.
2025
November: The annual village bonfire night took place on Saturday 1st November, complete with a fantastic fireworks display. Attendance was down compared to normal so the takings are expected to be down, but the group still hope to make a small profit (final amount TBC).
This event could not happen without help from the volunteers, support from village groups and local organisations. Thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help before, on the night, and after the event. Well done also to the fireworks team, including the newest members who recently completed their fireworks training! They put on a safe and spectacular show that has become a village tradition.
Special thanks to the Parish Council and Viv Vines (PC Clerk), Kington St Michael Village Shop Limited, Kington Café, KSM Club, Chippenham Pallet Company, MJ Church Recycling, and Merv Singer and team. This simply could not run without your support.
As well as an annual fund-raiser for the QE2 Field, this is very much a community event designed to bring together all ages and, despite the weather this year, it was great to see that spirit still very much in evidence on the night!
New Storage Facility & Paths
The QE2 group was delighted that the new wooden-clad storage container was installed just in time for bonfire night! Thanks to the Parish Council for its support with this facility.
There are new paths from the field down to the Nymph Hay, making walking easier. Thanks to Merv Singer and his team for the continued work at the field, to help make these improvements.
If you are interested in getting involved, email ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com to register your interest.
September: The committee was delighted to have received approval from the Parish Council to go ahead with plans for a storage facility at the field. This will be a huge help in storing equipment required for events, including bonfire night. Thanks go to the PC for its support.
July: The large climbing frame in the children’s playground has now been repaired, but volunteers are still needed to clean up the main timber supports and apply wood preserver.
Both sets of replacement swings are due for delivery imminently. Once delivered, these will be installed ASAP by Merv and team. Volunteers will also be needed to help tidy/refresh the safety surfaces (repair kits are on order).
If you are willing to help with either of the above (at a time convenient to you and with all materials/expenses covered), please email ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com.
Markings in the games court area will be laid soon and new football nets have been ordered. Discussions regarding future playground design and equipment, plus storage options at the field, are also underway.
Reminder also that the community BBQ at the field is available to hire for just £15 – please email to make a booking.
May:
BBQ Hire – summer has arrived and the BBQ is available to hire at the QE2 field! Just £15 to hire (water facility access included). For more details or to book your BBQ, please email ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com.
Children’s playground – playground upgrades are in progress. Replacement swings are on order and these will be installed by Merv Singer and team as soon as they arrive. A tree has been planted in the play area, major repairs/upgrades to the large climbing frame are scheduled for 16th June (although this remains safe to use until then) and other enhancements, including repairs to wear and tear on swing safety surfaces, are also underway.
- Kick Wall area – this area has been resurfaced and completely re-fenced and basketball hoops have been added at each end. Court/line markings are being agreed and will be delivered soon.
- Orchard and trees – maintenance has been ongoing for the orchard and for other trees on the field.
- Storage – container options are being investigated to enable necessary equipment to be stored at the recreation field.
Volunteers wanted – we are a VERY small group of volunteers (all of whom also have busy day jobs). If you can help in any way with special projects or at specific events, please get in touch – ksmqe2fieldgroup@gmail.com. You do NOT need to join an official committee – we are a friendly, voluntary group and members are always welcome BUT we really need some extra hands to make things happen.
